Bowie really puts it into another gear the second half of the song. Very nice rendition. He wasn't a big star for nothing.

I disagree. Have you never hear Heroes? "And the shame fell on the other side." "And we kissed as though nothing would fall." (???) If that song is not about feelings so deep that would destroy aperson, I don't know what is.
By the way, it was listening to Bowie singing this song that got me listening to the Beach Boys, and, yes, I believe Brian Wilson is indeed a musical genius.
